Heroes gets better!

September 30, 2008 - 8:02 am

What a great episode of Heroes. I don’t want to blog about every episode of every TV show I watch, I was just going to do the premieres, but last night was great. Almost everything that I was left confused on was explained (to a degree) this week and the story lines really took off.

This wasn’t the first time that we’ve seen Syler have some inner conflict, but I think it’s going to be really interesting to have them dive into that story a bit more. There were always hints of good in him and a struggle with that.

I’m not sure why we need another character that can paint the future, but I was kind of bored with Parkman’s story anyway, so I’m not too broken up about it.

Also, I think Zooey finally has some competition for the status of my number one celebrity crush. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything else with Brea Grant (the new character, Daphne) before,  but I might have to look into that. I want more of her character pretty much right now.

Choke (spoilers)

September 29, 2008 - 12:13 pm

I feel like a complete schlep because I didn’t get around to reading the book before I went to see the movie. I meant to read it about six years ago, but instead it’s been sitting on my bookshelf collecting dust. So this review should be taken with a double dose of the normal grain of salt that you should be taking my reviews for stuff with anyway.

I didn’t think this was a horrible movie. I was entertained the entire time and didn’t really feel bored for a single second. But the thing is, it’s just not a really original story. It’s not Fight Club and it’s not supposed to be, but Chucky P seemed to be trying to mimic it as much as possible–and since I didn’t read Choke I am strictly comparing Choke to Fight Club the movie and not the book. The narrative felt almost identical, even right down to when Victor meets Paige and provides the bit of Jack meets Marla Singer esque foreshadowing. In fact, the whole first half of the movie felt just like Fight Club, even down to the shooting style and feel and vibe of the film. And then at the end, it gets all Fight Club even more throwing us a twist and an extremely foreseable bit of closure between the characters.

Without a doubt, Choke is an interesting and entirely messed up story, but going beyond the reliance on everything done right in Fight Club, nothing feels all that original. The relationship between Victor and his mother, while not entirely cliché, has been done almost exactly the same before (the book was even writen). But the “twist” could not have been any more ripped off from Don’t Look In The Basement.  It felt so blatant, that I think I actually left the theater angry about it.

Again, it’s not a horrible movie, I was entertained, which is what’s important, but I just was not in love with it. And unfortunately, the movie actually decreased my interest in reading the book so, chances are, I will never get around to picking it up.

Baby Mama

- 10:31 am

I ended up watching this twice over the weekend since the girlfriend fell asleep about 20 minutes in the first time. It’s a decent flick if you like typical predictable and romantic comedies…which I’m a complete sucker for.

Being a big fan of Tina Fey–please tell me that you’ve seen her Sarah Palin on SNL–it was going to be hard for me to be let down. Her character was pretty much Liz Lemon from 30 Rock, but that didn’t really bother me too much. She’s good at that successful career, but hopeless and awkward personal life kind of thing. That and she’s pretty damn hot…especially in the black dress she wears in the club scene. Amy Poehler was…Amy Poehler. I don’t particularly love her, she sometimes annoys me, but I don’t dislike her either. She’s usually good for a few laughs.

The Office season premiere

September 27, 2008 - 1:49 pm

I wanted to post about this yesterday, but I completely didn’t get around to it. Thursday night’s season premiere of The Office…incredible. There barely felt like any gap between this episode and the finale of season four. The story picked up right where it left off and everything that we were left hanging on for months got addressed. Sure, it took until the very end to get some Toby action in, but almost everything else was pretty much at the forefront. The only real complaint that I had was with the Jan being pregnant thing. It was sort of glossed over and we weren’t really given as much as I was hoping for. But I thought that the Dwight/Andy/Angela debacle more than made up for it. It was nice to see Jim finally propose to Pam and I thought that the way it worked out was a pretty cute way to do it, but during the entire episode I was kind of expecting something bad to happen between them. They really led you to believe that Pam was going to end up cheating on Jim while she was in NYC. And having been in a situation eerily similar to the one that Jim was put in with Pam going away, I can really relate to the feelings of being the one left at home while your other is off in the city for a few months. You want to be supportive and you are happy for them and the opportunity that they have, but fighting the jealousy can be hard. I thought those feelings came across pretty perfectly. Well done by both the writers and John Krasinski.

The Playlist 9/24

September 25, 2008 - 12:35 pm

Here’s last night’s playlist for The Playlist. I’m starting to seriously feel the burden of trying to keep up with doing a show of entirely new music. I love how it forces me to stay in tune with new music, but it gets stressful sometimes. I never find it hard to fill the time up with new stuff that’s good, but at the same time, I think I overload myself with too much music to check out and because of that, I rarely get to give any once album the attention that I would like to.

How I Met Your Mother season premiere

September 23, 2008 - 3:27 pm

Unlike Heroes, the How I Met Your Mother season premiere was a bit of a let down. I liked the story, but I thought that it just wasn’t as funny as most episodes of this show are, especially the ones in the second half of last season. Though, that still puts it in the top like ten percent of shows currently on the air.

The one thing that this episode did deliver with was reminding me of a serious fear that I have…asking a girl to marry me and then finding out that she doesn’t like Star Wars. Between this and Burn After Reading, I now officially fear marriage. Thanks entertainment industry!

Heroes: Villians

- 3:25 pm

Wow, just wow. After Season 2, I didn’t know what to expect. Tim Kring acknowledged that last season was lacking, but I wasn’t expecting them to hit us with this right off the bat! Very intense episode with a lot going on. It did feel a little long considering that it was two hours with short commercial breaks, but they really packed a lot in there. I’m officially pumped for the rest of this season!

It seems like they’ve got a good story line this time around with lots of twists and turns. I knew it would have been too good to be true, but I was really hoping that Ali Larter was written off the show when Niki died at the end of last season so I was really disappointed to see back. With the exception of Maya, I don’t think there is any character more useless to the story or more annoying than Niki/Tracy…that and I just don’t like Ali Larter.

But her aside, I really can’t wait to see where everything goes with the whole Petrelli family, Hiro and Ando, and Monhinder and Maya. These story lines are all over the place now and the foreshadowing is going to drive me nuts!

Strictly from a dude’s perspective, this season is shaping up to have lots of eye-candy between Hayden, Dania Ramirez looking good this season, Kristen Bell, and the new speedster blond girl.

Whoo!

Burn After Reading

September 22, 2008 - 3:41 pm

When my dad and I were talking about Burn After Reading before I saw it, his only comment on it was “It’s a Coen Brothers movie.” I figured that this meant it’s either great or simply leaves you saying “alright, I’m okay with that” when walking out. I can’t really say that I “jock” the Coen Brothers all that much. I like what they do and i think that they do it well, but I don’t normally go crazy over their stuff the way that some people do.

But I liked this movie a lot. I wasn’t expecting to be blown away and I wasn’t, but I can tell you that I was thoroughly entertained the entire time. I spent a little bit of time throughout the movie saying to myself “wait a second, where’s this going? How are they going to bring all of these stories back to-…oh, there it is.” It was good, actually. The story and dialogue were silly enough to keep me happy and while it was reasonably predictable, there were a few little bits here and there that were just unexpected enough to keep you engaged.

There was no stellar acting anywhere, but none of it stuck out as being bad either. Everyone pretty much did exactly what their character required. No more. No less. Except for maybe Brad Pitt who did make me giggle a few times. I’m not even sure if this sounds weird or not, but I think Tilda Swinton looked pretty hot for a late 40s woman. Though, I can’t rule out the possibility that it could be entirely the accent.

I think my one main gripe with this movie is that I don’t think I ever want to get married now. I guess that’s not a big loss, but that’s for future-me to worry about.
