Minus The Bear

October 27, 2008 - 3:45 pm

It’s not even funny how insanely tight this band is live. When you play the music that they do, you have to be tight, but these guys take it to a whole new level. They’re also just a great band to see live all-around…except for when they decide to play for a hour and twenty minutes. Too long! I don’t have an attention span that can handle that! There are very few bands that I want to see play for more than 45 minutes and even though I really like Minus The Bear, they are not one of those bands. But they did play a couple new songs that were ridiculously good.

It’s kind of funny that I saw them at the same venue (Starland Ballroom in Sayreville, NJ) almost exactly a year ago. I’d say that they’re performance was roughly the same, but that’s probably a good thing. The opening bands may or may not have been better though. I can’t decide. The Annuals had a few decent parts in some of their songs, but mostly, it was just kind of more going on than was necessary. Sylvie was a little better though.

EDIT: Wow, I forgot to title this post.

Forgetting Sarah Marshall

October 25, 2008 - 3:59 pm

I heard all kinds of mixed reviews about Forgetting Sarah Marshall, but despite falling asleep for a few minutes in the middle–we’ll blame this on the wine–I liked it a lot. It was cute and had a few good laughs. I’m kind of glad that we just paid a few bucks to rent it rather than full price when it was in the theaters or for the DVD, but it was good. I would watch again.

Mila Kunis has been looking damn good lately. I wasn’t a huge fan of her when she was younger and on That 70s Show, but wow, she looked really good in this movie. So did Kristen Bell, but she was still a step down from Mila Kunis. What didn’t look good? Seeing Jason Segel’s dong…three times. It was a bit bigger than I expected…wait, I wasn’t expecting anything. I wasn’t even expecting to see the damn thing!

Rival Schools at Conflict of Interest X

October 21, 2008 - 5:56 pm

I wasn’t super excited when I heard that Rival Schools was reuniting. I’m not sure why. I loved them the first time around and I love most of Walter Schreifels’s stuff, but over the past five or six years, I almost entirely forgot about them. But when I heard that they were playing The Syndicate’s CMJ kickoff party, Conflict Of Interest X, this year I got really into the idea of seeing them again.

And it was definitely worth attending an overly crowded party at Rebel in NYC and a late Monday night with work in the morning to see them. They were extremely awesome and played everything I wanted to hear…of course leaving me hanging on “Used For Glue” until the last song. They sounded tight and it was as if the the last six years of being broken up hadn’t happened.

Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

October 20, 2008 - 1:46 pm

I guess I’m a sucker for pseudo-indie films these days because I really loved Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist. It’s definitely a movie for people under the age of thirty and the story probably feels real familiar to those of us who care more about being annoying music snobs than annoying athletic jocks. The whole movie makes a cliche attempt to glorify a hipster lifestyle complete with mix-tapes, loud music, and secret shows by bands that no one else is cool enough to have heard of, but I think it works. I saw a review that calls this movie Ferris Bueller’s Night Out and I think that description almost fits, actually. Not completely, but close enough for me to steal it and put it here.

Michael Cera and Kat Dennings have a great on screen chemistry, but it’s hard not to compare to Juno and Dennings, while a decent actress, just doesn’t fit alongside him as well as Ellen Page does. I’ve loved Michael Cera since the first episode of Arrested Development, he just never seems to disappoint. And this time around, I almost feel like he just took all of my own mannerisms and a few parts of my life. I liked that. :-)

Though the soundtrack is a step below Juno’s in the cuteness factor, it’s still pretty decent with stuff by Devendra Banhart, The Submarines, Band Of Horses, Shout Out Louds and more. You know, all kinds of indie snobbery.

All in all, this is the kind of movie that I feel very at home with. I almost forgot that I was watching a movie.

Rating: B+

This car washes itself

October 10, 2008 - 3:34 pm

I found these pictures on www.englishrussia.com. It’s a weird site, but every once in a while, there’s a gem that needs to be shared. Anyone got any captions?

“Sir, are you awake that it is illegal to drive while under the influence of bubbles?”

“Radio, I need and ID on a tub…yes, tub…no, like for bathing.”

“This tubmobile lets me sleep in an extra 15 minutes!”

“Being pulled over while in a bathtube is even worse than being pulled over while parked.”
