Beards up!

November 21, 2008 - 1:08 pm

Well, they haven’t posted any of my graphs yet, but I’m hopeful that GraphJam will like this guy.

I got the idea to make it last night when I was trying to convince my friend to grow a full beard despite the fact that as beard awesomeness rises, the amount of girls that will have sex with you decreases.

Quantum Of Solace

November 16, 2008 - 2:12 pm

I pretty much grew up on James Bond movies, but the Brosnan ones kind of took some of my interest away in seeing new ones. It wasn’t that they were bad. Far from it. They just didn’t really have that Bond vibe that I grew up with and craved.

Luckily, Casino Royale’s reset of the series was just the trick to get me back in the game. Daniel Craig is an absolutely ridiculously good Bond. Different. Much more intense and serious, but the perfect shake up for the series. I might be willing to go out on a limb and put him as my favorite Bond to date, but then again, I also hold the very unpopular opinion of loving Roger Moore’s work so we’ll stay away from that.

Going into Casino Royale, I had extremely low expectations of both the movie and Craig. When I was completely blown away and proved 100% wrong, I immediately wanted more so I went into Quantum Of Solace expecting the best. We don’t even need to go into the details of the deal that I was willing to make with my girlfriend to get her to go with me (she had never seen any Bond movies before). I ignored all reviews of the movie prior to going in with the exception of Gizmodo’s Jesus Diaz calling it the “perfect Bond movie.”

I was not let down. In any way.

  • Super hot Bond girl: check
  • Other attractive women: check
  • Great action sequences throughout the movie: check
  • Story that is actually worthwhile: check
  • Daniel Craig completely not fucking around: check
  • Plenty of Bond caused collateral damage: check
  • Bond pissing off M: check
  • Gadgets: check
  • Car chase with cars that I would never be able to afford: check

Everything that I wanted.

The Onion’s A.V. Club compares Casino Royale to Batman Begins and says that Quantum Of Solace is not its The Dark Knight. It’s not. But it’s close.

The Playlist 11/12

November 13, 2008 - 1:03 pm

Last night’s show was pretty great from beginning to end. Lots of energy and great music to play.

I realized that I have to start working on my Top 25 for the year, but I think it could be a struggle. There were plenty of decent albums this year, but I don’t think there were 25 worthy of being put on a list. Maybe 10. Th last last few years were hard to limit to 25, I don’t know what happened this year.

Anyway, here’s the playlist for the show…

Dillinger Four Contemplate This On The Tree Of Woe Civil War
Band Marino Every Time I Make A Girl Cry I Know I’ve Done My Job The Sea & The Beast
Love Is All Movie Romance A Hundred Things Keep Me Up At Night
Sam Champion Dead Moon Heavenly Bender
Hush Now, The Ashes The Hush Now
Tom Gabel Random Hearts Heart Burns
Organ, The Let The Bells Ring Thieves
Red Eyed Legends Monsters Wake Up, Legend
Shaky Hands, The Loosen Up Lunlight
I’m From Barcelona Headphones Who Killed Harry Houdini?
Proud Simon One Night Stand On A Cadmium Yellow Avenue Night Of Criminals
Hotel Lights Down Firecracker People
Frances The Brain All The While
Fatal Film All Our Cash Thrill’r
Upsidedown, The Mea Maxima Culpa Human Destination
Tom Gabel 100 Years Of War Heart Burns

Role Models

November 10, 2008 - 7:26 pm

Damn. Elizabeth Banks has been busy as hell lately. I’m not sure where she has been finding the time for all that she’s been doing, but I’m not going to complain. With a solid cast and direction by David Wain, Role Models kind of had set itself up to not suck and luckily, it came through on that and even kind of made me like Sean William Scott. But sadly for all of the adults in this movie, Bobb’e J Thomson made them all look like amateurs and I’m sure he loved being in this movie and getting to curse as much as he did. But seriously, watch this kid, he’s going to be a big name in Hollywood.

The story was pretty cheesy and while I have to agree with The Onion’s A.V. Club that this was without a doubt the most commercial thing that David Wain has done, I loved it. It’s hilarious and cute without being annoying and has boobs in it. Is there anything else that I need to say? Oh yeah and it was so much fun that it actually makes dressing up as if it were medieval times and living out fantasy battles in real life seem almost like a good idea. Almost.

I Sleepwalked With Mike Birbiglia

November 8, 2008 - 6:59 pm

I’m a relatively new fan of Mike Birbiglia, but I’ve gotten really into his comedy lately. My girlfriend and I probably end up listening to Two Drink Mike at least once a week in the car and quote it and use parts of it in at least half of the conversations that we have. It’s more than likely a little beyond ridiculous at this point. So we were both excited when we found out that we would be able to go see his new show, Sleepwalk With Me, to celebrate our anniversary.

Tickets were a bit on the expensive side, especially considering he’s the only one on stage and it’s basically just him doing stand-up for an hour and a half, but it was worth it and since our seats were right in the front row, I can’t complain too much.

The show is essentially one long story about his experiences with Rapid eye movement disorder which causes him to sleepwalk a lot and get into all kinds of crazy situations. That said, he spends much more time going off on tangents throughout the show than actually talking about the specific incidences he has had sleepwalking. This isn’t really a bad thing though.

For anyone that is a fan of his other comedy work, you’ll probably recognize a few jokes that he reuses. This doesn’t really take away from the show at all. Even the jokes you’ve heard already are as hilarious as the ones you hear for the first time. Though, I think one of the most entertaining parts of the show is how awkward his mannerisms are. He calls himself out on Two Drink Mike for making most situations awkward and after you see him on stage and in person, you’ll completely understand.

Highly recommended.

Here’s a clip of him doing a short segment from the show on his recent appearance on Conan…

PS: Mike, I know you’ll be reading this thanks to Google Alerts. Leave a comment. :-)
