The Toxic Avenger (the musical)

April 30, 2009 - 4:17 pm

toxicad_whole_logo3_smallLast night, I was a very lucky dude, I got to see the Toxic Avenger musical for free thanks to it being Bloggers Night and me, well, knowing people. Yes, I know people and you don’t. I’m awesome, you suck. The show is currently playing in NYC at New World Stages, the same place that hosted Evil Dead: The Musical while it was in NYC.

I’m going to get straight to the point, this was great. Pure fun from beginning to end. As a lover of the Garden State, there was a lot to relate to. They really drove home the whole New Jersey being polluted thing along with many other references to things we take as standard New Jersey staples. Corruption, Turnpike humor, Springsteen, misplaced stereotypes. Hilarious stuff, I promise.

The stage setup was really neat. I’m not a big theater person and so I can’t say I’ve been to see a ton of theatrical productions, but of what I have seen, this set was easily the most innovative. I tried to grab a picture before it started, but that plan was quickly thwarted by an overeager usher. All around the stage, there were big drums representing the barrels of toxic waste from Manhattan. These drums actually took up most of the stage, even in the center. However, the drums in the center were on a big rotating platform that allowed them to change the set really quickly. And the band–the music was a very rock based sound with a ton of guitar distortion–was set up on top of the drums on the left side of the stage rather than in a pit. There were even lights on them. It was pretty cool and kind of reminded me of one of my favorite things about New Jersey, basement shows.

The cast was phenomenal and only made of up five members. The actors for Toxie and Sarah were steady, but the other three members played multiple characters and pulled off very quick costume changes. Two of them are listed in the playbill as simply playing “White Dude” and “Black Dude” and pulled off at least five or six roles each, including Sarah’s female friends and the townspeople. They did a great job, but the real star of the show was Nancy Opel who plays both the mayor and Toxie’s mom. The script actually uses this fact to poke a lot of fun at itself making references to it being possible for the two of them to be in the same room at the same time. This conflict really climaxes toward the end of the production when the two characters have a huge argument/fight with each other while Nancy Opel runs back and forth behind some curtains to do some quick costume changes in between lyrics. At the end, she comes out dressed with one side as the mayor and one side as the mother, very Harvey Two-Face esque. She takes turns facing each direction so that the characters can pull off a really fast name calling bit. It was ingeniously done.

I’m not going to mention anything about the movies, but I will say that this was insanely fun and everything that it should have been. Comparing this to Evil Dead: The Musical is a fairly obvious thing to do and as much as I hold on to the statement that that was literally the greatest thing I’ve ever seen in my life, this comes very close. Oh, so very close.

Do yourself a favor and go see this.

The Thermals, The Decemberists, and last week’s top artists

April 27, 2009 - 1:51 pm

I finally got my hands on the new The Decemberists record, The Hazards Of Love, and I have to say, it’s pretty awesome. I’ve only listened to it once, but I’m really feeling it. There is a little progression in the sound from their previous work, but it’s still very much them. I’ll report back after I spend more time with it.

I’ve also discovered that I was silly for never getting into The Thermals before. I’ll still need to go through their back catalog, but the new album, Now We Can See, is beyond fantastic. They were just a band that I never really felt the need to check out for some reason so I’ve never really heard much of them before. I plan on seriously changing that ASAP. And you should be checking out this record.

Anyway, on to the music from last week, I checked out the Jay-Z mashed up with Radiohead thing, Jaydiohead. I really wasn’t into it at all. Not in the least. I think it’s mostly because I’m not into Jay-Z at all. That’s something that I caught a lot of flack for over the weekend at a BBQ. He just doesn’t do anything for me though.

Beyond that, here’s what I listened to last week a lot:

  • The Steinways
  • Maritime
  • The Gaslight Anthem
  • Cheap Girls
  • Metric
  • Let Me Run
  • The Replacements
  • Sundowner
  • The Lawrence Arms
  • Murder By Death
  • Strike Anywhere
  • Jaydiohead
  • The Jealous Sound
  • Beat Strings
  • For Science
  • Jawbreaker
  • Minus The Bear
  • Against Me!
  • Ida Maria
  • By The Grace Of God
  • The Bronx
  • Mia Riddle

Observe And Report

April 26, 2009 - 10:04 pm

observe-and-reportAfter trying to see this movie for a few weeks now, I finally made it to the theater in an attempt to beat the heat once it broke 90 degrees. Originally, I had some high hopes for this flick, but I kept hearing mixed things about it so I didn’t know what to expect anymore. I don’t really think I had any expectations at all when I went in which was probably a good thing because it was pretty meh.

I’m really not a big Anna Farris fan at all. I don’t hate her, but I don’t think she’s ever really a driving factor for me to see anything. And it’s a good thing this movie was no exception because she was actually just annoying as hell. As for Seth Rogen, this was easily his weakest film to date. He stayed within the realm of what he’s good at, but his character was barely likable.

The movie wasn’t bad, but it really wasn’t that good either. It failed to deliver any characters that you cared about or anything we haven’t seen before. I don’t even think I cared about what was going on at all, to tell you the truth. There were a few good laughs and McLusky’s Lightsabre Cocksucker Blues being in it was pretty awesome, but other than that, this is definitely one to wait until DVD for.

Oh and I should probably mention that the best part of this movie was Patton Oswalt. He singlehandedly provided about half the laughs in the movie.

Rating: C-

A few new shirts

April 25, 2009 - 1:45 pm

I got a few new shirts last week from Tee Fury. These were from the random grab bag that they do and, to be honest, I really only like the yellow/orange one. Getting random shirts is always a gamble and I feel like it’s worked out pretty well for me lately, so I was due for a few crappy ones, I guess. Oh well.

The Playlist 4/22

April 23, 2009 - 9:19 am

Last night’s show was a ton of fun to do, I really enjoyed every moment of it. This week was a significantly less country inspired show than last week as my country kick has worn back down to its normal level. There were tons of great tunes though. So far this has been an absolutely great year for music and there are a lot of great things slated to come out over the next few months as well. I can barely keep up with all of the stuff that I want to check out. Just this week alone, I picked up six new albums that I want to spend some serious time with. And that’s in addition to the other albums I picked up this week that I’ll probably never actually listen to.

Last week, I posted about how I was really excited to check out that Sarah Borges record more. Well, I did and I was really disappointed. It just wasn’t grabbing me at all and then midway through, there was a song all about Jesus and I completely lost interest. I don’t really care what people believe in, all I ask is that they keep it out of the music I’m trying to listen to.

Here’s the playlist from last night:

Neko Case People Got A Lotta Nerve Middle Cyclone
Comet Gain You Can Hide Your Love Forever Broken Record Prayers
Papercuts A Dictator’s Lament You Can Have What You Want
Harlem Snakes Sunlight Technicolor Health
Maria Taylor 100,000 Times Lady Luck
Decemberists, The The Rake’s Song The Hazards Of Love
Company Of Theives Oscar Wilde Ordinary Riches
Ross Island Bridge We Met Too Soon (feat. Anne Adams) Volume 1: The Process Is Now The Work
Neil Young Just Singing A Song Fork In The Road
Jeremy Jay In This Lonely Town Slow Dance
Mia Riddle Echo Tumble And Drag
Foma Gray’s Elegy Inverness
Samantha Crain And The Midnight Shivers Scissor Tales Song In The Night
Metric Sick Muse Fantasies
Thermals, The I Let It Go Now We Can See
Sonic Youth Sacred Trickster Sacred Trickster [Single]

Source: 90.3 The Core

Edit/Update: A commenter pointed out that “Ride with Me” by Sarah Borges & The Broken Singles is actually a Lemonheads cover. I feel pretty ashamed for not picking up on that, actually. So my apologies on holding lyrics about Jesus against them.

New shirt!

April 21, 2009 - 9:11 am

This one came from Chop Shop and was only $5. It’s slightly similar to my t-shirt of a t-shirt, but for $5, I like it a lot.

Top bands for week ending 4/19

April 20, 2009 - 11:33 am

Here’s what I spent some time listening to last week. As you can see, I’m still all about the Neko Case record and the beautiful weather at the end of the week brought out some Promise Ring for me. I think it was a couple weeks ago, but I got super obsessed with Icky Mettle by Archers Of Loaf so I was also listening to that a lot as well. I think I’ve made a switch on my favorite Archers Of Loaf album now. White Trash Heroes was always my favorite album by them, but I think that was because it was the first thing I ever heard by them. I find that when I get into a band that is already broken up or has a lot of stuff out already, the first thing I hear by them tends to be my favorite and what I compare all their other stuff too.

  • Neko Case
  • The Lawrence Arms
  • Minus The Bear
  • The Hold Steady
  • The Cars
  • Johnny Cash
  • The Tattletales
  • Archers Of Loaf
  • The Promise Ring
  • Refused
  • Terminal Reynaldo
  • The Loved Ones
  • Challenger
  • The French Connection
  • Drive-By Truckers

Fails for the week

April 19, 2009 - 2:08 pm

Last night, I was in NYC to hang out with some friends. We grabbed some dinner and cupcakes and then when to this bar that my friend’s friend was having a party at. The bar was called LaVa Gina. Just say it to yourself. Yup. The jokes…um…flowed all night.

Anyway, on the way back to the Penn Station, we needed to catch an F uptown so we walked over to the Second Ave. stop since we were near there. We walk down the steps to the platform and there’s an E train sitting there, just hanging out. I don’t live in NYC so I’m not an MTA expert and I know that there are often service changes, but why the hell was there an E train at Second Ave on the FV line? It was one of the newer trains that have the digital displays and the marquee said “last stop.” What the hell?!? Second Ave. isn’t even the last stop for the F or V, let alone some other subway train that was lost and on the wrong line. We ended up getting on it anyway figuring that no matter what we’d get where we needed to go. The E goes right to Penn Station and if it followed the F line, then that’s what we were planning on doing anyway so we’d be set. The train ended up heading towards West 4th and crossing over to become a real E. It was like some bastard child of the ACE and FV lines. It was weird as hell, but it all worked out.

And in other weirdness and silliness…

This was an ad that I saw in a porta-potty at the field where my friends and I play soccer. I’ve been trying to figure out if it was known ahead of time that the ad was going to be in a porta-potty or if the copy is accidentally ironic.

I submitted this next one to failblog.org, as you can see by the captioning. I saw it in the men’s room of a restaurant.

And finally, this one is a little blurry, but notice the spelling fail on the menu at Pink Pony on Ludlow in NYC. The food was very good though.

Some overheards

- 6:17 am

Here are a few overheards that I got recently.

Friend, enthusiastically: It’s like old-school gospel!

Coworker: I’ve never had a full erection.

Coworker: Math is hard! Barbie said so and I agree!

Coworker: A true fix will break the system.

Friend: Can we go in the vagina now?

Girl wearing skirt while walking through Penn Station to her boyfriend: Can I take my pants off now?
