5.38 miles

June 30, 2011 - 9:21 pm

Tonight’s run was a slower affair, but it was also a bit longer than the 4 miles that were planned. The fiancée and I ran to the landlord’s house to drop off the rent which I just stuck in the mailbox as we ran by. We took a different way home than we were going to do, so the distance added up 5.38 miles where we decided to stop (which was still a mile from home).

The run felt good and at that pace (something like 8:50/mile), I could have gone all day. My ankle hurt a little bit in the second half the run, but felt fine after some icing.

The total time was 47:40.

Google+

- 10:27 am

By now, you know all about Google+ and you might even be using it already. Cool, right? It’s funny how this thing is pretty much like Facebook, but not quite. It’s very similar to Facebook early on when many of today’s features hadn’t been implemented yet, but that’s kind of okay because they’ve seemed to have launched with the basics and the important stuff.

At first, the question is how does this stand a chance and how is it not exactly the same as Facebook. While it seems like that’s hard to answer, it’s not, there’s actually a very important distinction in ideology. Facebook is all about sharing stuff with everyone you know and opting out specific people that you may not want to see things. Google+ changes that and focuses on sharing specific things with the specific people that you feel are interested in that. This is Circles. If I want to share a bunch of nerdy links, I can just post those for one circle. If I want to post some stuff about music, I can post that only to the people that are going to be interested in it and not fill up the streams of people who don’t care. This is the way it should be. This is better. A lot better. And not only is this better, but this is the default. It definitely has the potential to make for a much better signal-to-noise ratio.

To me, that’s the one main distinction between the two besides features (which will come with time for Google+). And that distinction means a lot to me as someone that has a lot of groups of friends that all have different interests. My music related friends don’t care about tech stuff or running or snowboarding. Meanwhile, my tech friends may not listen to the same music as me. I don’t clog their streams and they won’t clog mine with stuff about…knitting…or whatever.

Google has failed with social before for a number of reasons. Either they launched with small limited betas that don’t allow enough people in to actually make it useful (e.g. Wave) or it’s too niche (e.g. Wave again) or it’s just a straight clone of something else with nothing new to offer and poor implementation (e.g. Buzz). This may only not be a straight clone of Facebook because of a single ideological difference, but I think enough was done right already to give Google+ a real future.

The big question is whether or not people will actually end up using it. Facebook has something like 700 million users right now. That’s a lot, but they lost a few million the US last month. That’s not a trend, but it could become one and it could be because Facebook isn’t doing it for a lot of people. Google+ could present a reason for more users to leave and I think Google+ could actually snag some of those users that have left Facebook already. One thing that helps is that the Google+ bar is just there whenever you’re on any Google site, right at the top. And you can share from it. Millions of people have Gmail open at all times, so they’ll just always have Google+ right there ready to use without going to a new site or opening a new tab/window. I always have Google Reader open (always…on EVERY computer) and it’s there too. I can super quickly share a link from Google Reader without even changing tabs. It’s wonderful. I can also see comments and such from right there as well. I don’t even have to open Google+ to use it or read entire comment threads. This is a huge advantage over Facebook. Plus, I can mute individual comment threads without turning off all notifications. That’s one thing that kills me on Facebook, I comment on something and then I’m stuck getting emails for comments from people I don’t know for days. Now that I’ve typed it out, this might actually be my second favorite thing about Google+ thus far.

I don’t really see Sparks taking off or being of use to me. I don’t need a machine picking out articles for me when I’ve got 300+ sites added to my Google Reader. I have more than enough to read already. But the hang outs thing is pretty neat. I like the idea of just saying “yo, I’m sitting here, who wants to chill?” It works pretty well in my limited use of it. It could already be the best group video chat out there. And it’s got a great feature that shows the person talking as a larger video and everyone else as smaller ones. When someone else starts to talk, it moves them to the big one. Automatically. In a three person chat last night, it worked almost flawlessly. Very impressive. It doesn’t sound like much, but it actually helps a lot and makes it feel more like you’re actually talking with a group of people and turning your head to face the person that is speaking. I never ever use video chat, but I might actually use this.

Another thing that’s going to help Google’s chances here is that they’re actually making apps for mobile OSes besides Android and not just relying on delivering via the browser. This killed Buzz for me. I don’t want to load an app, go to a page, and then start using something. It works, but it’s not a good user experience. On my phone, I don’t want to always have to be waiting for UI stuff to download, it’s much more efficient to only download the content. I also don’t want two steps before seeing content when I could have just one.

Only time will tell if Google+ takes off. There are a lot of features that Google needs to build out still and who knows how they’ll handle things like fan pages and music (a tie-in to Google Music could go along way against iCloud). I’d like to see people start using this and I hope Google builds and adds features quickly. I’ve only been using it for about 12 hours, but I already like it a lot and feel like it’s got a lot of potential to best Facebook.

Archers of Loaf at the Music Hall of Williamsburg

June 28, 2011 - 9:21 am

Alright, so 90s indie-rock band Archers of Loaf is currently in the middle of a reunion tour. These things can really be hit or miss, but I figured that I’d give it a try since I’ve never seen them before. I’m not going to do a full review of the show, but for a bunch of guys in their 40s (?), they had an insane amount of energy. They really brought the show. They played everything I wanted to hear and played it well. They were tight and awesome. I was genuinely surprised and impressed. The only thing I could have done without would have been the two encores. Seriously, society as a whole needs to come together to abolish the concept of planned encores.

I’ve never been to the Music Hall of Williamsburg before, but it was very nice. We got there early and snagged a couple seats in the balcony and stayed there all night. It was a great spot to watch from, but combined with the ultra-low lighting, it was not a great spot to take photos from.

Here’s what I got.

3.13 miles – 26:26 minutes

June 27, 2011 - 10:03 am

It was back to the Vibrams for this morning’s pre-work run. Getting out of bed was tough, but I felt good running. I had some energy and could breathe pretty well. My legs felt good and the ankle pain was pretty negligible. I finally feel like I’m on the right track for healing up.

2 miles

June 25, 2011 - 9:16 am

Today was another sneaker run and it was only barely better than the other day. My legs did feel a little better and my lungs are getting better, so that’s a plus.

2 miles

June 22, 2011 - 9:09 am

Today was my first outdoor run in sneakers since the beginning of September. It sucked. The sneakers felt like weights on my feet that were holding my back. My legs felt lifeless with no spring in them. But I did feel like it was worth trying to see how my ankles felt in them. It actually wasn’t much different, but I did notice the support in my arches.

I may need to make the switch while I finish healing and then ease back over to the Vibrams.

The run was alright besides that, my lungs are weak again from not running, but that will get better over time.

Cat number two!

June 21, 2011 - 10:21 pm

Welp, we got a second cat. I don’t know what we’re thinking, but we did.

We’ve actually been kind of looking for a little while because even though Leela is going to make this very difficult and feel very threatened at first, we think it’d be good for her to have a companion while we’re out and at work. Additionally, we kind of wanted a cat that would want to cuddle more since Leela mostly only does it at night while we’re sleeping.

So when a couple friends found a little kitten under their deck and were looking to find him a home, we kind of took it as a sign. The kitten is only four or five weeks old and very tiny. He’s about the same size that Leela was when I got her, but whereas she was all ears, eyes, and paws (a clear sign of the size that she was going to grow into), this little guy has beady little eyes, little paws, and a short tail. He seems like he may have been the runt and have been kicked out of the litter or something. It’s hard to know.

So far, he’s been cuddly and fun. He’s timid at first, but when he comes out, he loves people. Right now, he’s locked in the second bedroom with everything he needs. It’s going to be a few days of this before we let him and Leela meet, but I don’t know how well that’s going to go. Leela has been pretty upset since we got this guy home and has been very defensive/aggressive towards me because of it. Leela is a very temperamental and territorial cat. She’s got an ego and she’s easily threatened. You have to do everything on her terms. I really hope she gets over it and they can get along though.

Leela has a serious claim on the master bedroom so keeping the new guy in the second bedroom for now should help him claim that room as his space which should help. And considering that it seems as though he’s not going to be nearly as big as she is when he’s fully grown, Leela should have no problem asserting her dominance over him. I think once that’s established and she knows that everyone else knows she’s in charge, they’ll be okay.

So what did we name this little guy? Well, Leela is Leela, as in Turanga Leela, and all of my computers and gadgets are named after Futurama robots. We went with the obvious and named him Philip J Fry. And if the dynamic between him and Leela works out the way that I think it will, their names will be very fitting.

And here are a few photos of the little guy.

2 miles

June 20, 2011 - 11:12 am

Today was my first run since the Superhero Half Marathon last month. My ankles STILL don’t feel 100%, but they were getting very close, the best they’ve felt since the Fall. The run was just a little two-miler without my phone so I don’t know my pace. Unfortunately, I did feel a little pain in my left ankle towards the end, so I don’t know. Afterwards, it didn’t feel too bad though.

Marathon training starts in about two weeks so I don’t really have any more time to rest. I’m just going to have to take these two weeks to ease into the running.

Super 8

June 16, 2011 - 5:05 pm

Super 8 may not be in any way at all related to Cloverfield as a project, but you’ll feel a very familiar vibe while sitting in the theater watching it. It’s a bit of a different style, but the creatures are very reminiscent of each other. Though, this make sense as J.J. Abrams produced Cloverfield and the same guy designed both monsters.

Super 8 opens with one of the most powerful opening shots I’ve seen in a movie. It’s simple and nothing is said, but those first few seconds really set a tone for the whole movie and convey so much more than any words could have. Beyond this, the movie keeps with a steady pace and focuses on a handful of nerdy kids making their own film to enter into a contest. Abrams does a great job of creating characters that we actually care about and in some ways remind us of ourselves 15-20 years ago, almost in a Goonies or Stand By Me kind of way. Almost. When shit goes down in their small town (rhyme not intentional), you feel a legitimate connection to the kids.

While much of the movie’s success relies on an element of surprise that was carefully curated, you won’t actually find much to be surprised about. For the most part, you won’t be disappointed about not being surprised, however.

Super 8 brings a return to a more innocent time where integrity matters in a way that will  remind you of the Spielberg-branded films of the 80s you grew up with. Super 8 is not the the perfect film, but it’s engaging, sucks the viewer right in, and has no lack of great acting carrying it through.  The bottom line is that this is a solid film and worth two hours of your time.

Greendale Human Beings

June 9, 2011 - 9:39 pm

This shirt was a no brainer when I saw it on RIPT. I’m a huge fan of Community and might even go so far as to say it’s in the top five shows currently running.

I can’t wait to wear it tomorrow.
