5 miles

July 16, 2011 - 11:23 am

Today’s run was rough. Very, very rough. I was up late drinking at a friend’s house last night and even though I got up early to head home, it was hot by the time I started and I was very dehydrated. I had no energy at all. It was a struggle just to get through the entire thing.

Not good.

Phineas and Ferb shirt

July 14, 2011 - 9:56 pm

This shirt is awesome. My fiancée got it for me a couple weeks for no good reason and I love it. We fell in love with Phineas and Ferb after our last trip to Disney World. We shared a room with our friends who are very into the show and they got us hooked. Since then, Doofensmirtz and Perry the Platypus have become the source of many inside jokes in our household.

5 miles

- 8:57 pm

I picked things up a bit for tonight’s run. My ankle has been feeling alright and the weather was cooler with very low humidity (a rarity here in Jersey) so I wanted to run a little faster. I went for it. I started off with a quick first mile at 7:18 minutes/mile, but I ended up slowing down from there each mile. I’m still trying to build my stamina back up to where it was two months ago (which still wasn’t what it was six months ago).

My ankle felt alright except for a third of a mile in the middle there where it hurt a bit, but it quickly went away. I had some soreness in some other areas, but nothing to worry about. My only real concern at the moment is the side of my foot. It’s been hurting for a couple months, but has been a lesser concern compared to my ankle. With the ankle feeling like it’s pretty close to completely healed, my foot is now starting to worry me. I’m hoping that will get better quickly too now that my ankle is better.

3 miles

July 12, 2011 - 7:47 pm

It was well over 90 degrees out when this run started. It was hot. So it was incredibly slow, but we made it through. No pain, just a lot of sweat.

Horrible Bosses

July 11, 2011 - 8:41 pm

Horrible Bosses has a great cast. It’s that simple, it’s just a solid cast and everyone pulls their weight. I’m not a huge Jennifer Aniston fan (she’s alright), but she was pretty incredible in this movie. Between her, Charlie Day, and Kevin Spacey, I don’t know who was the best. Charlie Day’s character is pretty much a slightly smarter Charlie from It’s Always Sunny, but I was more than okay with that. His high-strung, yelling-because-he-doesn’t-know-how-better-to-communicate antics were perfect for the character.

While I’m lucky enough to not hate my bosses at my current job, Horrible Bosses hits on a pretty good premise for a flick that most people have fantasized about at some point in their lives. Killing your boss, who hasn’t thought about that in even the smallest way? I’m not calling anyone (myself included) homicidal, but you know what I mean. So that sort of makes the idea not entirely original, but they work with it. The jokes aren’t always the best and sometimes there are big gaps without anything awesome happening, but everything that does happen is at least delivered well by actors that I love. At the end of the day, that’s good enough for me.

Horrible Boses isn’t going to win any awards or blast you with a ton of creativity, but it’s got people you like in it and they’re doing what they do best.

10.01 miles

July 10, 2011 - 11:55 am

Today was the first long run of marathon training. It’s the longest I’ve run since the Superhero Half and I was a bit worried about it and how my ankle was going to hold up. Luckily, it was fine and there was no pain. I kept the pace as slow as I could physically get my body to go and I think that helped a bit. I had enough stamina to make it all the way through the run and there was nothing more than a little soreness. I can deal with that.

5.01 miles

July 9, 2011 - 12:49 pm

I was a little worried about today’s run after what happened on Wednesday when I couldn’t even get through the entire run. I tried to keep today a little slower at about 7:50 minute/mile which I think may have helped. I got through all 5 miles without any pain, but I wouldn’t call it an energetic run. I don’t think I could have made it too much further today.

T-shirt from Tilteed

July 6, 2011 - 10:29 pm

This is a new shirt I got from Tilteed recently. It’s actually been sitting on my dining room table for a couple weeks waiting to be photographed, but that doesn’t change the fact that it took a few weeks to come either. Oh well, it’s a cute shirt. Nothing super special, but I like it.

3 miles – 22:47

- 10:49 am

I woke up early to get a run in before work today and felt pretty good when I started out, but unfortunately, I had to stop at three miles instead of hitting the planned distance of five miles. My ankle starting hurting badly after 2.5 miles and I had to stop. There was no pain before or after running, but that half of a mile was really bad, I couldn’t run through it. I’m pretty disappointed and worried that this might be a sign of what’s to come for marathon training.

Cranford Jaycees Firecracker 4 Miler 2011 – 32:50

July 5, 2011 - 9:17 am

Yesterday was the annual Firecracker 4 miler in Cranford which my fiancée and I run each year. It’s a fun race, but being that it’s on the 4th of July, it can be very hot and humid. Luckily, yesterday wasn’t too bad. I enjoy the course quite a bit and there are generally plenty of people sitting on the side the road spraying you down with a hose to keep you nice and cool. Very appreciated. The race is also pretty well organized and you get a pint glass along with your t-shirt. Good stuff.

Yesterday also marked the two year anniversary of the first race my fiancée ever ran. However, in those two years, we’ve never once actually run together for a race, so I decided we should give it a shot (there was some prompting from her for this). It was fun running a race with her and she kept a good pace too, I was impressed. She ended up with a new PR for 4 miles at 32:49. As we approached the finish line we held hands and I stopped just before line and let her go across first.

Generally, I try to give it everything I have when I run a race and shoot for a new PR each time, but with the ankle still not fully healed, it seemed like a good idea to take it easier and not shoot for anything crazy. I would like to run a 4 mile race again soon though for a PR, I think I can do close to 26 minutes. Which is crazy because my time for the Firecracker last year was only 1:06 faster than yesterday with the fiancée. This says a lot about how far we’ve both come in the last year. She took almost two minutes off her time and I’m not looking at running 5-mile and under races at close to 6:30 minute/mile. Crazy.

This race also kicks off the official start of our marathon training. Exciting.
